Scientists of BSU have developed a safe "biological packaging" based on chitosan. This package will help in the long-term storage of perishable products. The project is being developed by the team of the Laboratory of Applied Problems of Biology of the Department of Zoology of the Faculty of Biology. The work is headed by the head of the laboratory of Vladimir Kurchenko. Environmentally friendly "packaging" will increase the shelf life of fruits and vegetables, cuts of pork and beef, semi-finished products from poultry and fish. Chitosan is absolutely inert in the human body, and also in nature it is easily degraded by soil bacteria. The coating is hypoallergenic and does not require preliminary removal from the surface of products, it is easy to wash off with a small amount of water. Therefore, the proposed technology is environmentally friendly and can be widely used in the world.

"Biopacking" is formed when a solution of chitosan is applied to products. It is a natural non-toxic biopolymer with bactericidal properties. It is a natural non-toxic biopolymer that has bactericidal properties. When the solvent evaporates, it forms films on different surfaces.  An important advantage of innovation is the coating method. Products can be processed in production and in the field using manual or automatic sprayers. The film can be applied using agricultural machinery.

Today in the CIS countries and abroad there are no analogues to the innovative proposal of BSU. Typically for storing fruit and vegetable products are used the wax composition, the mixture of serum albumin, beeswax, ascorbic acid, starch, glycerol, sorbitol and others. They contain difficult to digest organic compounds and preservatives that cause various allergic reactions. The development of BSU scientists excludes the use of these substances and antibiotics, this will have a positive effect on the health of the population.

Currently, an experimental batch of solutions for creating coating was made at BSU. The patent application is submitted. In the initial experiments participated the students of the Lyceum of the Belarusian State University Lyceum researchers conducted a study on the example of grapes and found that the "edible" film significantly increases the shelf life of these perishable fruits.
